Undergraduates across the country are choosing to leave science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs before they graduate. Only 21 percent of black students in these fields finish their bachelor degrees within five years. While much of the struggle is related to financial aid, experts point to national models of success that are helping ensure a steady pipeline of diverse STEM graduates.
At the 2012 Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Global Competitiveness Conference held February in Philadelphia, Dr. Anthony Junior, Office of Naval Research program manager for Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions, moderated a panel of experts, scholars and leaders that discussed the topic, Retention and Engagement: What it Takes to Secure the Future of Young Engineers.
