The Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) today announced it is gathering leaders from across the community of historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) for The Sloan Consortium HBCU Leadership Summit for Online Learning, Oct. 29, 2014, in Orlando, Florida. This event runs concurrently with Day 1 of the 20th Annual Sloan-C International Conference on Online Learning: Driving Innovation with Online Learning (ALN14), which takes place Oct. 29-31, 2014.

Organized around the theme, "Breaking Barriers to Expand the Legacy into Online Learning," the Summit will examine specific online learning issues faced by HBCUs.

"We are excited for the opportunity to drill down into the unique concerns and opportunities of the HBCU community related to online learning," said Kathleen Ives, acting CEO and executive director, Sloan-C. "The Summit will offer universities with similar goals and interests for online learning the chance to network and build resource capacity. What's more, this one-day event will serve as a terrific lead-in to our ALN conference, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year. Attendees who participate in both events can expect to come away with valuable connections and fresh ideas that they can share with colleagues and immediately put into practice to advance their online learning programs."

"We know that a large number of students being served through online education want an HBCU experience," said Cristi Ford, Summit chair. "Our goal is to provide an informative, solutions-oriented approach on increasing the online footprint offered by the HBCU community. And we are delighted that Sloan-C is committed to exploring the needs of HBCU constituents and issues of this unique community."

Robert Blaine, interim associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Jackson State University, will deliver the keynote address titled, "Reaching the Connected Learner through Disruptive Innovation."
